When Conservatives crusade against government while they are trying to be appointed to head the government, I think that's weird!

Beware the power of the pajama-clad, Cheeto-eating, twitter, blogging hordes. We are legion!

All right. So Republicans are outraged, outraged, about a brand new cause nobody even knew was a cause. They say we must protect the incandescent light bulb—how dare we try to save billions of dollars in energy cost?

The Republicans ... are having a hard time getting their members to act as a unit instead of like a bunch of six-year-olds playing anarchist soccer; three teams, two goals, you decide.

All right. It turns out shutting down the government of the state of Minnesota also means shutting off all Minnesotans‘ access to beer. Seriously. It‘s like what you‘d invent in a cartoon to give Minnesota a sense of urgency on ending the shutdown. No more beer until this all gets done.

Ridding Iraq of weapons of mass destruction. That was the whole idea, right? That‘s why we went. I am reluctant to let that fact disappear down the memory hole, because if — as the war ends, or at least starts to end — if, at this time, the history of the war is written as us going there to topple the regime of a bad man when that frankly isn‘t why were told that we were going there — Aren‘t we still at risk of making this horrific mistake again? And, aren‘t we letting the people who foisted the WMD idea on us, not many years ago, aren‘t we sort of letting them get away with it?

Despite the evidence that massive, massive, massive corporate welfare, massive corporate tax cuts and tax loopholes do not translate to more jobs here in America. The Republican argument in Washington right now is, hey, it‘s tough times. We can‘t afford stuff like E. coli screening and five-day school weeks anymore, can‘t afford luxuries like that. And any money we got right now, we got to spend it on giving corporations more tax breaks or else.

There is nothing new under the sun. Maybe the universe is trying to remind us of that by having Newt Gingrich run for something again.

The downside of playing dumb is that you sound dumb.

Now, in contrast to how Republicans kowtow and sign pledges to, even the rather extreme elements of their base—Democrats like to roil and aggravate and alienate theirs. It is sometimes called “punching the hippy.”

The American people do not want us to raise taxes, period, full stop, makes for a really nice, tidy, talking point in this big fight. It does not, however, appear to be a true talking point. The most recent NBC News/”Wall Street Journal” poll to poll on this question showed that when asked if they would support a federal surtax, an extra tax on people earning over $1 million a year, 81 percent of Americans said, yes, they would support that -- 81 percent of Americans, just perspective, do not agree that ice is cold or the word “duh” has a “t” in it. But 81 percent agreed raise taxes on millionaires. That we can agree on.

I think that generally one of the things that—one of the things that I sort of feel like is the meta issue in the type of political commentary that I do is that nobody really cares about hypocrisy—everybody expects hypocrisy from politicians. And so, you tell a politician they are being a hypocrite, and they say, oh, you have such a nasty tune, stop saying those rude things, because they don‘t care about the substance of it.

What's amazing is that the conservative movement since the Reagan era has been telling conservatives that government is the problem, which makes experience running government a mark on your record. Having constructive ideas about what government could do makes you a suspicious character. Honestly, the very idea that you would thirst to hold high government office in Washington, D.C. almost inherently disqualifies you as a Republican. So everybody is qualified, and therefore you pick the person who most entertains you. It's a weird thing.

The U.S. Army has outlawed five-toed shoes for all soldiers. You know, these beauties, designed to increase your athletic performance, improve posture, add an octave to your singing range or bring back the Latin you forgot from college or seriously make your toes feel better, which seems weird to me, because don‘t toes get lonesome like dogs when they‘re separated and all by themselves?

I'm a liberal, but the thing that interests me most in American politics is center-right to far-right politics, because (a) it's a laugh a minute and (b) there's no stasis. There's no solid core moving forward. You never know who's going to come along.
