quotations about the national debt
At what point will Washington throw in the towel and stop mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren -- when interest on national debt exceeds total annual revenues or when lending countries lose confidence in our ability to repay our debt?
EDWARD INGHRIM

Our national debt is our biggest national security threat.
ADMIRAL MIKE MULLEN

A great debt is a great evil and a great national debt is a great national evil.
ANONYMOUS

RONALD REAGAN

One important circumstance, however, as to the progress of the redemption of national debt, is, we believe, very little understood; which is, the mischief, the difficulty, perhaps the impossibility, of redeeming national debt beyond a limited annual extend.
ROBERT HAMILTON
Hamilton on the National Debt
The National Debt is a frightful thing in the eyes of many persons, because being called a debt, it brings to mind at once personal liabilities, and the powers creditors possess, and how they would use the same against persons proportionately indebted, and with such small assets as the balance sheet of nations exhibits. But, without wishing to be thought a repudiator, the writer submits that this is an absurdity; that the National Debt is in reality no debt at all, in the ordinary sense (of being recoverable, at least), and in fact, is no debt in any sense beyond the sacred obligation on the part of Government to pay faithfully the annuities or interests due to the respective stock holders.
