quotations about shopping
In some ways the world was like a shopping centre, and he himself was a doubtful customer, often ineffectual, being talked into buying things he didn't want, things indeed which nobody in their right mind would want to buy.

I've got a good mind to give up living, and go shopping instead
To pick up me a tombstone, and be pronounced dead

Living in the sprawl,
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,
And there's no end in sight,
I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

My idea of shopping is asking the lovely yet formidable Marcia to pick something up for me while she's out. It never works. "I am not picking out underwear again for you," is her usual response, which is why I have underwear older than my kids.

Grocery shopping was intimidating ... the aisles were filled with everything from jumbo to miniature travel-sized rations. Who could I call to ask, "Does the size even matter?" I dare not ask my ex-wife.

I love to go shopping. I love to freak out salespeople. They ask me if they can help me, and I say, 'Have you got anything I'd like?' Then they ask me what size I need, and I say, 'Extra medium.'

Americans are fascinated by their own love of shopping. This does not make them unique. It's just that they have more to buy than most other people on the planet. And it's also an affirmation of faith in their country, its prosperity and limitless bounty. They have shops the way that lesser countries have statues.

But with each step she took, Mythili realized why most people don't go shopping alone. It's because this mind of ours gets pretty damn busy. It starts analyzing every little stimulus you receive. And because you don't have another human being walking next to you distracting you from all the little stuff you should be ignoring, your mind takes it upon itself to provide you with companionship and talk you through your life.

I do not "shop." I "buy." It's one of my best traits, I think.

I've definitely seen a lot of women go in and get really excited and you overspend. When you go home, that's never a good feeling. And when you wear the dress, it's not a good feeling. That guilt sort of takes all the fun and reward of that shopping high.

Only 364 more shopping days 'til Christmas
The kids have already started making out their wish list
All of those brand new toys they opened up this morning
Should come with a warning:
Soon becomes old and boring.
Back to the malls there's not one second to waste
Use Grandma's car and get a handicapped parking space
There's only 364 more shopping days 'til Christmas

My mother has agreed to take me shoe shopping at the mall. We enter the shopping center in a suburb of Washington, D.C., and pass by the Orange Julius and the arcade without stopping. I am like a hound on the hunt. My mom is just trying to keep up. As I approach one shoe store I glance in and don't see anything I am interested in and we keep going. We pass Spencer's, but that is a place to go with friends, not my mother, so I don't even slow down. We stop at another shoe store. I hold up a shoe and ask the sales clerk if they have a size 5. He shakes his head and says the smallest they have in that style is a 6. A little exasperated sigh escapes me. It is not easy to find shoes that I like in my size. I really hate shoe shopping.

We'll go shopping, babe
It's something we can stand
Down in the mall
We will abide
Up on the escalator
Darling, we will ride

At the sales counter, the human race's greatest confrontation with existence, there were no yesterdays, no history to be relived, only an intense transactional present.
