quotations about toys
Don't take your toys inside just because it's raining.

If there is a species which is more maltreated than children, then it must be their toys, which they handle in an incredibly off-hand manner.... Toys are thus the end point in that long chain in which all the conditions of despotic high-handedness are in play which enchain beings one to another, from one species to another--cruel divinities to their sacrificial victims, from masters to slaves, from adults to children, and from children to their objects.

Cool Memories
Maybe that's the best way to spin this latest trend--that children, failed by an unadventurous toy industry, have turned tchotchkes into playthings, so they can play on anyway. And good for them.

Only when human sorrows are turned into a toy with glaring colors will baby people become interested for a while at least. The people are a very fickle baby that must have new toys every day.

The trend for people aged 18 plus buying toys for themselves is possibly a reaction against the stresses of our fast-paced lives. Toys are fun -- and when you are having fun any stress you might be feeling goes away. It makes perfect sense.

Had I but died an hour before this chance
I had liv'd a blessed time; for, from this instant,
There's nothing serious in mortality:
All is but toys; renown and grace is dead:
The wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees
Is left this vault to brag of.

Toys and games are no longer strictly for kids. A survey in the UK earlier this month found that almost one in five children's building sets and action figures are bought by adults for their own use.

Parents (and some teachers, too) often think that purchased toys are always superior to found or created items for young children. However, they might find that their young child prefers the box or even the wrapping paper to the gift that came in the box. Boxes are wonderful toys for stacking, carrying, nesting, filling, dumping, and matching. Children love climbing into and out of boxes, and very large boxes make great playhouses.

Making Toys for Preschool Children: Using Ordinary Stuff for Extraordinary Play
Toys have become commodities instead of playthings. The Beanie Babies craze is a recent example. When McDonald's gave away Beanie Babies as Happy Meal prizes, adults lined up to collect the toys, discarding the hamburgers and french fries. Others have driven hundreds of miles and spent hundreds of dollars to add Bongo the Chimp to their menagerie. Even children seem to value Beanie Babies as collectibles rather than as toys. In a letter to the Chicago Tribune, a young girl expressed her love for Beanie Babies in terms of cold cash: "I have 53, because they will be worth a lot of money in the next 10 to 20 years." The stampede to collect Beanie Babies is the latest twist in the toy industry's plot to turn children into avaricious monsters and adults into clawing harpies.

No wonder Santa Claus is a jolly old fellow: Dad pays for all the toys, and Santa gets all the credit.

Children's toys are typically not so exciting; they're often riffs off the latest big movie or TV show, or gussied-up versions of old reliable games and toys.

A good dog toy will amuse your dog for a little while, but a great dog toy will keep him busy for hours at a time.

You really can't blame the military for wanting to go to war. They've got all these new toys and they want to know whether they work or not.

Whatever happened to the good old days when kids were kids? And toys were toys. I wonder what I would have done 35 years ago if I had known my Barbie would be worth hundreds of dollars today. Would I have left Barbie untouched in her original box, encased like Snow White in a glass coffin so I could cash in on my investment? My Ponytail Barbie ended up with a crew cut--I was practicing to be a hairdresser when I grew up. I replaced her zebra-striped swim suit with dresses fashioned from socks and scraps of fabric and lace. That was the year I wanted to be a fashion designer in Paris.

The tools of trade are the toys of industry, and the lawyer's books, the surgeon's instruments, the author's pen, the workman's kit and the tools of whatever profession or occupation are not more the tools of trade than they are the toys of livelihood in the great industrial nursery of the world.
